Carol Saboya
It has always been a musical environment. Carol Saboya, the composer Antônio Adolfo's daughter, was raised surrounded by inspired chords, scribbled scores and songs being born: The art in its full creation process.
When she was eight, she had her voice recorded for the first time along with Miéle for the compact disc A menina e a TV. When she was still a little girl, she took part as a vocalist in albums of Erasmo Carlos and Ângela Ro Ro. She also took part in the historical musical presentation Verde que te quero ver and infantile soundtracks.
She spent three years studying singing in the United States, taking part in Sérgio Mendes' Brasileiro CD. After returning to Brazil, she made a recording with the North American pianist Joyce Collins and participated in a tribute to Aldir Blanc, who was moved to listen to Carol featuring the song Carta de pedra at Canecão. The girl with that sweet voice and impeccable tuning started getting the media's attention.
Carol's expected solo work came in 1998. Dança da voz, produced by Almir Chediak, awarded Carol the 1998's as new vocalist by "Prêmio Sharp". On the following year, she jumped into Tom Jobim's work and recorded the album Janelas abertas, accompanied by Nelson Faria's guitar.
In 2000, it is time to make a collective unconscious visit with the cinematographic repertoire of Sessão Passatempo. In the same year, she featured Imaginária by Suely Mesquita and Mário Sève in the Brazilian Music Festival (Festival da Música Brasileira) promoted by 'TV Globo'.
The next album, Presente (2003), recovers the first album's sophisticated and successful mix of popular and traditional music. Then, two albums for JVC Japan: Bossa Nova and Nova Bossa.
Two years after, a new CD was released: Antonio Adolfo e Carol Saboya ao vivo/live, which was recorded in Festival Miami. In 2008 another CD, Chão aberto, focusing on songs by brazilian young talent Mário Sève. In 2010, once again an album with Antonio Adolfo (Lá e Cá/Here and There). Mixing Brazilian and American standards by some of the most inspired composers, such as Jobim and Cole Porter.
For the first time, in 2012, a solo album released in the US, the CD Belezas – The Music of Ivan Lins and Milton Nascimento. Produced and arranged by Antonio Adolfo, with a dream team of Brazilian musicians and guest such as Dave Liebman (sax) and Hendrik Meurkens (harmonica). The songs were sung in both, Portuguese (lyrics by Ivan's and Milton's partners such as Vitor Martins, Fernando Brant, Marcio Borges, among others) and English, with lyrics by Brenda Russell, Kim Nazarian and Jane Monheit.

Jazz Quanta June: Todos na família: Antonio Adolfo and Carol Saboya
by C. Michael Bailey
The greatest international contribution to American Jazz may well be that from Latin America, generally, and Brazil, specifically. Brazil lends to jazz a rhythmically humid breeze that is, at once, floral, earthy, fecund, and sated. Two contemporary Brazilian gift-givers include the father-daughter forces of nature pianist/composer Antonio Adolfo and his daughter Carol Saboya. There is no greater critical pleasure than considering the two together. Presently, we have that opportunity. Antonio Adolfo Tropical Infinito AAM ...

Classic samba from enchanting Brazilian vocalist Carol Saboya and a first-rate band. It's a family affair, with her father, pianist/composer Antonio Adolfo in charge of piano and arrangements. He is working with his regular band, so the arrangements fit like a glove. The core repertoire is unimpeachable, with three songs by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim (including Passarim" and A Felicidade"), two by the later master Djavan, and one each by Pixinguinha, Joao Bosco and Edu Lobo. Saboya is equally ...

Back in 1969, pianist Antonio Adolfo was working with vocalist Elis Regina. While touring through Sweden, Regina and her band had the opportunity to connect with Toots Thielemans, leading to the recording of Elis & Toots (Philips, 1969). Now, more than forty-five years later, Adolfo finds himself in a similar situation, working alongside another sunny Brazilian singer and European harmonica player--vocalist Carol Saboya, who happens to be his daughter, and vibraphonist/harmonica player Hendrik Meurkens. Copa Village finds ...

Brazilian vocalist Carol Saboya's previous recording with her father, pianist Antonio Adolfo--La e Ca: Here and There (AAM Music) --was one of the highlights of 2010. She returns as headliner on Belezas: The Music of Ivan Lins and Milton Nascimento again, supported by Adolfo and his very fine quartet. Composers Lins and Nascimento represent a late '60s answer to bossa nova, which had dominated Brazilian (and a good bit of American jazz) in the late 1950s and early '60s. Called ...

Jazz and samba have shared a rich interactive history for the last half-century. In Rio de Janeiro, musicians took note of Chet Baker, Bill Evans, and composers like Cole Porter while jazz musicians in Los Angeles and New York absorbed the music of Black Orpheus and bossa nova innovators Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto. Pianist/composer Antonio Adolfo was one of those young Rio players in the 1960s who found himself captivated by these new sounds, both at home and ...
