All About Jazz, which includes Jazz Near You, is a custom-developed software platform. It covers all the bases: content management, commerce, reader engagement... it even offers messaging capabilities. Though it can sometimes be a bear to maintain, it doesn't stop us from developing new sections—our polling and contest giveaway technology are terrific examples. This year, our improvements aren't on the scale of our poll or giveaway projects, but, collectively, they are significant.
We wanted to document our new features, general improvements, and bug fixes over the last four months. The more important ones are listed below.
Event copy. Fast track the creation of a new event (at Jazz Near You) with our handy event copy" feature.
Currency default. We now set the ticket price currency by country. The value no longer defaults to USD, so for example, if you live in Melbourne (Australia), it will default to AUD. We also added CAD, GBP, and EUR.
Vimeo support. In addition to YouTube, all submission forms support Vimeo video links.
Automated the creation of a Jazz Near You city website. Was a time-consuming pain; now it's a breeze. Since then we've added four cities in Wisconsin, Schenectady (NY), and Reykjavík. St. Petersberg (FL) was added a couple of months ago, the old fashioned way.
Venue closures. COVID was not kind to music venues and many closed as a result. We've made it super simple to report a permanently closed venue—simply click the Venue closed? Report it to us." link on the venue's page.
Created a mentoring program for new writers.
Improved image (e.g. concert poster) handling on the Jazz Near You event submission form.
Added TikTok link option to the standard and premium musician pages.
Improved client management functionality on a publicity firm page. We also published the Publicist's Guide to All About Jazz.
Fixes a series of minor bugs (scrolling issues on smaller devices and error validation issues).
More behind-the-scenes data structuring to optimize our pages.
Created various admin forms to improve content scheduling of publication.
Launched the Spotify Playlist of the Day promotional service.
Added functionality to help staff avoid duplicate reviews.
Created a new page to help musicians and publicists find best-fit writers for review consideration.
Restyled our business listing pages (improving the appearance and moving objects to optimum locations).
Launched favorite living pianists, living bassists, and legacy bassists polls.
Addressed caching issues to improve website performance.
Created a new BORN TODAY section on the home page.
Added following" capabilities so members can follow writers and receive notifications when said writer has an article published.
Restructured and optimized Jazz Near You to improve search engine placement (and it worked like a charm!). Traffic has increased significantly.
