Joris Teepe
Arriving in New York in 1992 with just his bass and a suitcase, he took lessons with Ron Carter, quickly met many musicians and started to work a lot. A year later he recorded his first CD, with a band co-led by Don Braden and featuring Cyrus Chestnut, Carl Allen and Tom Harrell. From that point everything really took off for Joris and he became a bassist in great demand. He has been working with the "who-is-who in Jazz", such as Benny Golson, Sonny Fortune, Rashied Ali, Billy Hart and Randy Brecker. Coming from a bebop background it was being a member of the Rashied Ali Quintet for 9 years what really changed his vision on music. "When I joined the group we first had Frank Lowe on saxophone (later replaced by Lawrence Clark) and I had no idea what they where doing".
Currently Joris has recorded 20 albums as a leader. He also established himself as a composer, record producer (many different labels and artists), educator (director of Jazz Studies at the Hanze University, Bass Professor at Queens College, NY) and bandleader.
Awards
In 2004 Joris Teepe has been nominated for the Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the category “Artist deserving wider recognition”.

Taking Elvin Jones' vaunted place in John Coltrane's eternal journey beyond the expected, Rashied Ali's mutable, intuitively malleable sense of time, at once both visceral and disembodied, propelled the saxophonist further into his explorations of music as a free, transcendent, spiritual entity. Although he continued to innovate with Alice Coltrane and Archie Shepp and influence musicians down the generations, Ali stepped outside the spotlight after Coltrane's death in 1967. Active in the '70s, Ali founded his own record label and ...

In politics, as well as music, the revolutionaries rarely govern. With the exceptions of Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, Marion Brown, and Rashied Ali exemplify this theory. Thankfully, those fighting in the trenches alongside the insurgents, like Joris Teepe, are determined to keep their memory and spirit alive. The Dutch-born New York bassist performed and recorded with Rashied Ali for nine years until the drummer's death in 2009. This project preserves that relationship and is a ...

In life we tend to make hard distinctions between the value of conversation and the worth of action, crystalizing such a dividing line with statements like talk is cheap" and actions speak louder than words." Jazz, however, has a way of relating the two. When musicians get together to play, the talk is the action. Every opportunity to play with others is a chance to open the lines of communication, and albums like this remind us that the deeper the ...

Joris Teepe Trio, with special guest Dave StrykerSmall's Jazz ClubNew York, NYJuly 19, 2012We wouldn't expect bassist/composer Joris Teepe to bring along a big band, symphony orchestra, and a chorus of a hundred voices with him to a gig at Small's Jazz Club.
