Joshua White

“Joshua has immense talent … I was impressed by his daring and courageous approach to improvisation on the cutting edge of innovation. He is his own man…” – HERBIE HANCOCK

>>> "Joshua White is one of the music scene’s most creative and technically accomplished pianists. Praised by legendary musicians like Herbie Hancock as having “immense talent” and lauded for his “daring and courageous approach to improvisation … on the cutting edge of innovation”, Joshua has distinguished himself as a formidable leader of distinct voice among his peers. Born and raised in Southern California, Joshua received early training at the piano and developed rapidly through rigorous study of both Western European Classical literature and the Black American Music traditions. Shortly after placing in the top two as a finalist of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition, Joshua began performing as a soloist and musical collaborator all over the world — and continues to maintain an active touring schedule throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia. His most frequent collaborators include Mark Dresser, Nicole Mitchell, Eric Revis, Michael Dessen, Steph Richards, Marvin “Smitty” Smith, Jeff Parker, Alex Cline, Josh Johnson, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Dwight Trible, Marshall Hawkins, and Gilbert Castellanos, among many others. Additionally, Joshua White can currently be seen and heard leading various configurations of his piano trio (#JWTrio) featuring Dean Hulett, Alex Boneham, Anna Butterss (bass) and Tyler Kreutel, Christian Euman, Dan Schnelle (drums)..."

Steph Richards: Power Vibe

Read "Power Vibe" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

Fire music. Free jazz. Third stream. Fourth stream. Avant improv, noise chamber blues, and whatever the meta and hashtags say it is, this sextet of loose cannons knows better and holds all the cards. Imagine for a moment what the reaction might be if your facial muscles suddenly, involuntarily, started to freeze, leaving you without expression and, without your art. Trumpeter Steph Richards, a halcyon force on the expanding concepts of free music, responded by making Power Vibe ...

Gilbert Castellanos: Espérame en el Cielo

Read "Espérame en el Cielo" reviewed by Ken Laster

San Diego's Gilbert Castellanos has been an important and consequential force on the West Coast jazz scene for years. He has appeared on dozens of recordings and often shares the stage with Charles McPherson, Willie Jones III, Gerald Clayton and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. As an educator, Castellanos is the founder and artistic director of the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory, teaching the legacy of jazz to middle and high school students. The long anticipated release of Espérame en el Cielo ...

Steph Richards: Zephyr

Read "Zephyr" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

Zephyr comes at you from all sides. Some you hear coming, others you don't. And some you just hear, stop and marvel at how we choose to communicate both to ourselves and to others. You listen in and then move on to the next unknown emergency, to the next crash course, the next languid sea. It comes in fanfare and whisper ,as trumpeter & explorer Steph Richards—six months pregnant and blowing through resonating water vessels—and equally fearless compatriot Joshua White—as ...

Christopher Hollyday: Dialogue

Read "Dialogue" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Jon Armstrong Sextet: Reabsorb

Read "Reabsorb" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Saxophonist Jon Armstrong reminds us that life and death are two sides of the same coin. Although seemingly disparate, like two sides of an LP, they cannot be separated. His sextet recording Reabsorb models this contrasting device by presenting two contrasting compositions, one on each side of an LP (also available as a CD and download). The music, inspired by an Erin Armstrong poem, presents both sides, which at first encounter come off as binary elements. Loud and soft. Busy ...

Joshua White, Mara Rosenbloom & Australian Art Orchestra

Read "Joshua White, Mara Rosenbloom & Australian Art Orchestra" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

It took me a while to get pianist Joshua White's album 13 Short Stories but it was worth the wait. White and his West Coast quartet are very, very good. The Australian Art Orchestra has become an institution in the Australian creative music scene. They're now directed by trumpeter and composer Peter Knight; their latest, Sometimes Home Can Grow Stranger Than Space, maintains their high standards. Pianist Mara Rosenbloom shares her new Respiration , ably supported by bassist Sean Conly ...

Jason Robinson: Harmonic Constituent

Read "Harmonic Constituent" reviewed by Mark Corroto

If you've ever visited Mendocino County you would have a head start to appreciate saxophonist Jason Robinson's Harmonic Constituent. His week-long retreat to this magnificent Northern California coast inspired this ambitious and diverse recording. Robinson, a musical omnivore previously recorded with the quartet Cosmologic, his Henry Threadgill inspired Janus Ensemble, in duos with Anthony Davis and Eric Hofbauer, and in electro-acoustic settings, to name just a few of his diverse interests. Robinson's quartet here includes pianist Joshua White ...
