Kerilie McDowall has been an active Shaw Spotlight volunteer learning from 2015-2022 with Todd Jones, Jocelyn Matwe, Stas Bobkov, John McKenzie, Kelly Adam, and Annette Lucas. Thanks to her work with the innovative Shaw Spotlight team and volunteer cameraman, Doug Tombe, McDowall became a 13x award-winning jazz short documentary TV Director of In the Zone: Rick Kilburn (2020). McDowall’s short movie reached 13 million ++ hits on the movie site IMDB Pro by November 2023.
A guitarist-jazz bandleader and instructor in Vancouver for over a decade, Kerilie came to Vancouver Island in 2000. Her passions are for music composing, organic gardening, and writing. For 35 years, McDowall has been tremendously inspired working with gifted guitar students and creatives, and in recent years has been coaching award-winning JUNO/Polaris musicians and new film directors.
Kerilie McDowall's 13x award-winning documentary short In the Zone: Rick Kilburn documents the life of Canadian jazz bassist and producer Rick Kilburn. A former New York City resident, Rick has formerly shortlisted for a Grammy, and has received numerous awards for his extensive work with musicians as a jazz record producer. As a bassist, he has worked with the elite of the jazz world including Dave Brubeck, Dan Brubeck, Chet Baker, Diana Krall, Paul Desmond, Lionel Hampton, Joe Lovano, Mose Allison, and countless others. Kilburn as a bassist-composer, spent over a decade in NYC learning the craft of production while recording/performing. He became a four-time JUNO-winning producer and West Coast Music Award, and East Coast Music Award winner. TV Director Kerilie McDowall released her film through Shaw Spotlight television volunteer hosting, directing/producing (2015-22) with Todd Jones and Nanaimo's TV team.

McDowall has played music since age 4/5, performing professionally at age 16/17, and was a jazz guitarist-bandleader in Vancouver, BC, from 1989-2000, is a freelance writer (DownBeat 2016-20), All About Jazz since 2021, INSPIRED 55+ since 2018, and more. She began writing and illustrating intuitively at age 7/8.
McDowall was a jazz radio host, producer and live engineer of the #1 Google-ranked (2013-15) Rhythm'a'ning from 1989-90, and 2000-2016. McDowall enjoys assisting others and passing along knowledge. She is savvy in the areas of film and guitar, and events publicity/the press assisting non-profits and recording artists with savings and expertise.
She enjoys assisting new film directors and filmmakers as a coach and instructor. She recently spoke live to women at the Women's Spirit Festival about the Joy of Music & Improvisation, Sound Centering/Meditation, and Positive Manifestation. McDowall started as a professional guitarist 40 years ago and is still working as a Nanaimo guitar, film, and music industry instructor/Polaris Music Prize and DownBeat music judge. A jazz guitarist, instructor and music composer from 1990-2000 in Vancouver, McDowall is a York University Bachelor of Fine Arts music graduate. Her area of study was New Music Composition and Classical and Jazz Guitar Performance.
