RBG Trio: RBG Trio
by Ian Patterson
From small acorns and all that. A Dublin gig in 2019 brought Ohio-raised, Derry-based saxophonist Meilana Gillard into the orbit of bassist Dave Redmond and drummer Kevin Brady. That became the springboard for an ongoing collaboration, pandemic be damned, that celebrates their mutual commitment with this fine debut album. All but two of the twelve straight-ahead originals are freshly minted, though the trio attacks these burners and ballads with the same swagger and intuitive feeling that are the hallmarks of ...

A hefty eight years separate Scott Flanigan's debut, Point of Departure (Self Produced, 2015), and Clouded Lines (SF Sounds, 2023). Not that Flanigan has been idle. In the intervening years the Belfast pianist has completed a Ph.D in jazz performance, recorded a duo album with French vocalist Fabrice Mourlon, co-founded a thriving Friday-night jazz club and, in his day to day life, juggles gigging and teaching schedules in Belfast, Dublin and Cork. Clouded Lines, the fruit of a joint commission ...

by Ian Patterson
Plan A, which is to say, leading his own acoustic band, has worked pretty well for Irish drummer Kevin Brady. A number of fine small ensemble recordings--with Ensam (Lpr Music, 2016) perhaps the pick of the bunchhas seen him marshal talents such as Bill Carrothers and Norma Winstone, touring the world in the process. With Plan B Brady plugs in and rocks out, taking wing on the back of 1970s-era Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock. It is not entirely new ...

by Ian Patterson
Fourth Function is the vehicle of Dublin vocalist/composer, multi-instrumentalist, writer, broadcaster and educator, Eamonn Lenihan. Backed by one of Ireland's finest rhythm sections in the form of bassist Dave Redmond, Kevin Brady and pianist Phil Ware, this five-song EP is a showcase for Lenihan's thought-provoking lyric songwriting and hip arrangements. Failing well to occupy any specific genre, Happy Ever After straddles shoe-gazing pop and chamber jazzas if Earl Okin had smooched his way into the Modern Jazz Quartet.

In his latter life, Larry Coryell was a frequent visitor to Ireland, where he would invariably hitch up with bassist David Redmond and drummer Kevin Brady, the esteemed rhythm team for the likes of Tommy Halferty, Bill Carrothers, Norma Winstone and Ian Shaw. In May 2016, during Coryell's last trip to Ireland, he entered Dublin's Hellfire Studios, with Redmond and Brady, to record what would be his final studio album. At around forty-five minutes in duration, Larry Coyell's Last Swing ...

The trans-Atlantic trio of drummer/composer Kevin Brady, Bill Carrothers and Dave Redmond first came together in 2006, since when it has toured more frequently than it's recorded. Ensam (LRP Music, 2016), the group's third outing, following Common Ground (The Livingroom Project, 2007) and Zeitgeist (Fresh Sounds, New Talent, 2009), is an intimate three-way dialogue, with veteran English singer Norma Winstone adding lustre to several tracks. Brady--who penned all the original tunes--leaves an abundance of room for his colleagues to explore ...

“Brady is an impressive drummer with strong chops, impeccable taste, creative and most notably, a terrific tone” —All About Jazz
Downbeat Magazine
Over the years, the commendable efforts of the label Fresh Sounds New Talent have provided some exposure to young musicians who. if deserving, are yet to define their musical vision. Although Irish drummer cannot be accused of bringing Bill Carrothers with the unique purpose of gaining credibility - the two seem to have developed a solid working relationship - the pianist provides most of the material and the recording definetely bears his mark and displays his most lyrical and romantic side. The most memorable aspects of the first part of the program are Brady's playing on his " Out of the Blue" and Carrothers Russian folk song quotes on his own " That Russian Thing." At midpoint, with the delightfully zany " Waltz Macabre" characterized by the pianist's rhythmic imagination and the drummer's circus rolls, the proceeding take a turn for the better. The title track is a collective effort that suggests that the trio is even more at ease without the constraints of fixed parameters. As a drummer and a leader, Brady avoids the common mistake of indulging himself and only takes one short solo. Building on his strengths of Zeitgeist, Brady is worth keeping an eye on.
