Maurice Hogue
Long, long, long-time jazz believer.
About Me
Grew up in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. Still there. What cold?
Started singing in bands in high school, and have been stuck in the middle of music ever since with the occasional hiatus to earn a living the usual way — with a real job.
Was a successful high school basketball and football coach, but music always lured me away. Ended up working for a festival/events organization — put on some big concerts, street festivals, did the planning, promotion, booking artists all that. Eventually led me to start my own company to work directly with artists, primarily jazz — Canadian and Australian — planning tours, doing promotion, finance, presenting, etc., even radio promotion!!!!
Finally took the plunge to do a jazz show at a new college radio station here. Loved doing the show. Wished I'd been doing this a lot longer. Eventually tired of the radio station, so joined Taint Radio and stayed with them until Taint Radio closed in 2024, always playing music that I think needs playing. One Man's Jazz is me. I'm too old to be told what to play and when to play it.
Long live the freedom of the music and taintradio.org.
My Jazz Story
One good thing about those cold Canadian nights and the flat topography of the center of the continent was the ability to find radio stations playing great music. In the mid 50s, the blues caught my attention via KTHS Little Rock Arkansas radio DJ Frank "Gatemouth" Page. Jazz was coming through from WGN Chicago and stations in Omaha and St. Louis. From the likes of Big Joe Turner, Muddy Waters, BB King, etc, re I started checking out the great singers like Billie and Ella and Eckstine which led to curiosity about the musicians playing with those singers. And a whole lot of musicians since! My passion for playing music that's outside the mainstream and global comes from a desire to see beyond the expected and traditional, sort of like the rest of my life.
