Paul Reynolds
Journalist and programmer in jazz, folk, country and other musics
About Me
I'm not a musician -- at least a jazz one -- but my experience includes multiple other roles within jazz. I've written for publications including CODA and CultureSonar, I've served as a board member and programmer (an avant-garde series) for the Ottawa Jazz Festival. I worked at the Touring Office of the Canada Arts Council, helping with outreach to the jazz and folk community and in running the Council's touring grant program for jazz and folk musicians. My jazz ears are big, but particular passions include artists who straddle (or straddled) the avant- garde and more inside styles, including Sam Rivers.
My ArticlesMy Jazz Story
The best jazz show I ever attended was...an Ornette Coleman performance at Lincoln Center in New York. A mesmerizing continuous set with Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins, it represents the highest level of empathetic playing I've ever experienced. The three were as one in ways that moved the heart and the soul.
