Michael Mason

Michael Mason

Musicians | Instrument: Flute | Location: Rockford

Michael Mason has always gone his way, musically and in life. A talented flutist with his own sound and conception, he has also been a firefighter in Chicago for 40-years and an instructor at the Fire Academy for the past decade. He has great respect for Mother Nature and his recordings, which include such albums as Human Revolution, Transcendence, and Impermanence, are full of uplifting performances that cannot be too tightly classified.

Luminosity is filled with atmospheric and picturesque music. On nine of his originals, Mason (who is also heard on keyboards) is joined by pianist David Rice, bassist Geoffrey Lowe, drummer-percussionist Danny Goessling, Jose Natal on congas and cajon, Aras Biskis who plays percussion from Africa, Mid East and Asia, violinist Jennifer Lowe, and cellist Ian Maksin. Together they perform ensemble-oriented groove music that generally has Mason and Rice as the main soloists.

The set begins with “Moments,” a piece with attractive electronic rhythmic riffs. The well-titled “Strut” has a strong and assertive forward motion while “Prism” is a warm jazz waltz. The light infectious groove of “Northern Light,” the hypnotic repetitions of “It’s This Way.” and a thoughtful “Reflection” add to the set’s variety while giving it the feel of an extended suite. “Blue Waters” is particularly memorable, building from Natal’s congas into an orchestral piece. The relaxed “Drift” and the driving “Notions” conclude the album which succeeds at being both accessible and inventive.

While Michael Mason’s flute playing is impressive throughout, his main purpose on Luminosity and his earlier recordings is to create music that will uplift one’s spirit and show that there is still plenty of hope in a world where darkness can sometimes seem overwhelming.

Michael Mason and the Exploratory Ensemble: Signal

Read "Signal" reviewed by Jerry D'Souza

Surprises are welcome, if they are pleasant ones. So is Michael Mason. This is his fifth release, and it is better late than never to make his acquaintance...Mason, who wrote all the tunes except one, shows a fair sense for what makes the pulse tick. His main approach is to write sketches rather than whole pieces, but he gives the musicians room to evolve and the direction in which to mould them. He keeps “Sir James” all to ...

Michael Mason: Angel On Fire

Read "Angel On Fire" reviewed by Mark Corroto

On December 1, 1958 fire broke out at Our Lady Of Angels school in Chicago. Ninety-two children and three Catholic nuns were killed and hundreds of others injured in the fire. Michael Mason a survivor of this tragedy is besides a talented Musician, a firefighter in the Chicago area. Mason and The Exploratory Ensemble present this tone poem to that tragic day and to the survivors. Like John Coltrane’s “Alabama,” this document is a beautiful statement assembled from so much ...

Impermanence  (AVG Records)

It is not an understatement to say that flutist Michael Mason’s music has always been “beyond category.” An adventurous musician based in Chicago, he creates atmospheric music that freely and seamlessly combines together the influences of the cultures of the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin America along with the improvisation of jazz.

Impermanence features Mason on a variety of flutes joined by the same group (except with tabla replacing keyboards) that he utilized on his previous album Transcendence. Mason is mostly in the forefront in a unique group that also includes either Fareed Haque on acoustic guitar or electric guitarist Scot Ashley, electric and acoustic bassist Geoffrey Lowe, Aras Biskis on various drums and percussion instruments from Africa, the Mid East and Asia, Danny Goessling playing percussion and hand pans, percussionist Jose Natal mostly on congas, and Sami Zayed on tabla. It is fair to say that no other ensemble sounds like this one.
