Janet Evra: Ask Her to Dance

Read "Ask Her to Dance" reviewed by Mackenzie Horne

When bassist Janet Evra dropped her debut solo record in the fall of 2018, she gifted something special to the residents of her adopted hometown. A veteran of the St. Louis circuit, Evra has made a name for herself on the scene vis-à-vis her Brazilian-heavy repertoire and charming voice. Many hours spent poring over the discographies of Antônio Carlos Jobim, Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto have manifested alongside Evra's distinct brand of modern pop to form Ask Her to Dance, ...

Russell Malone: Triple Play

Read "Triple Play" reviewed by C. Michael Bailey

Guitarist Russell Malone has found a durable and receptive home at MAXJAZZ, resulting in three fine recordings: Playground (2004); Live at Jazz Standard, Volume 1 (2006); and Live at Jazz Standard, Volume 2 (2006). He sports an elegant, unpretentious method and a shimmering, round and slightly velvety tone that compliments his considerable abilities. Triple Play is Malone's first trio recording, proving that the best jazz is created in small spaces. Malone's grasp of the blues is beyond ...

As your humble StLJN editor this week has been both swamped with paying-gig-type work and plagued by various equipment malfunctions, and this post is already late, this intro will be both mercifully brief and without embellishment. Here are some of the more noteworthy jazz and creative music performances happening in and around St. Louis over the next few days: Wednesday, July 20 Saxophonist and East St. Louis native Andre Delano, now based on the West Coast, is back in town ...

Though it's not officially summer for another week or so, the steamy weather associated with that season in St. Louis is already here. Fortunately, there's a variety of jazz and creative music events on tap over the next few days, both indoors and out, to help you cool out and beat the heat. Tonight, trumpeter, composer and New Orleans native Terence Blanchard continues his time in the local spotlight, as he and his quintet will play their second free outdoor ...

The first part of January typically is time off for a lot of touring musicians who'd just as soon stay home as deal with bad weather, audiences suffering from empty pockets or the post-holiday blahs, and so on. So even though the weather in St. Louis actually has been pretty nice for this time of year, it's no surprise that most of this week's jazz and creative music highlights are once again local in origin. Tonight, the jazz/funk/R&B combo Good ...

This week's lineup of jazz and creative music performances in St. Louis is headed by organist Joey DeFrancesco (pictured), who this evening will open a four-night gig continuing through Saturday at Jazz at the Bistro. DeFrancesco, considered by many to be the reigning champ of the blues-drenched jazz organ style pioneered by the late Jimmy Smith, has played in St. Louis numerous times in recent years, and thus likely needs no further introduction to most local jazz fans. That said, ...

This week's offerings of jazz and creative music in St. Louis include a number of shows with a holiday theme, as well as homecomings for a couple of St. Louis musicians who aren't heard performing locally nearly often enough. Let's go to the highlights: Tonight, saxophonist Dave Stone's trio provides the music for “Buddhism and the Beats," a free event at the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts that also will feature Buddhist art and readings from Beat writers of the ...

This week's post may be somewhat minimal, thanks to a bad head cold that's knocking yr. humble StLN editor for a loop, but the jazz and creative music offerings in St. Louis over the next few days are plentiful. Let's go to the highlights: Tonight, Zappa Plays Zappa performs at The Pageant. This year's show features the band playing Frank Zappa's 1974 album Apostrophe(') in its entirety. From the Liner Notes of "Triple Play" (MAXJAZZ 2010), Russell Malone writes, "I'm also happy to have made this musical documentation with two of the best young musicians on the scene today, Bassist David Wong, and drummer, Montez Montez Coleman. I first met Montez Coleman at a jam session at Cleopatra's Needle in New York about ten years ago. One of the things that makes him such a joy to play with is that he knows how to make the music exciting, but he doesn't get too excited himself and lose the groove. Montez is the epitome of grace and control."
