Daniel Hersog Jazz Orchestra: Open Spaces
by Jerome Wilson
The subtitle of this album is Folk Songs Reimagined" and Daniel Hersog uses a very liberal meaning for the term folk song" here. He includes traditional folk songs on this album, in addition to familiar tunes by Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot and his own folk-based compositions. All are given a glistening polish in the sweeping cinematic arrangements which he writes for his orchestra, and are further enhanced by excellent solo work from a number of musicians. Hersog's ...

by Jack Bowers
Locked down and socially distanced during the pandemic, composer-arranger Daniel Hersog had an interesting idea: rearrange some well-known and well-loved folk songs, most with Canadian roots, for jazz orchestra and throw in a handful of his own original compositions with a folk-tune ambience. The result is Open Spaces: Folk Songs Reimagined, the sophomore album by Hersog's Vancouver-based ensemble. As on his debut recording, Night Devoid of Stars (Cellar Music, 2020), Hersog welcomes a number of talented guest ...

by Troy Dostert
Although the Covid pandemic has been devastating to the artistic community, and certainly jazz musicians are no exception, albums like Michael Feinberg's Hard Times point to the possibility of hopeful resilience. With a top-shelf bunch of colleagues and smart compositions with rhythmically crafty arrangements, the bassist's eighth release is a winner, with a plucky spirit and satisfying grooves in abundance. Feinberg pulled this band together in October 2020, and with folks like drummer Jeff “Tain" Watts and pianist ...

There's a fascinating, affirmative equilibrium coursing throughout Thunda that words may fall short of. It's a music of purity and wonder spoken by survivors of the oddest year. It's a broad, fearless conversation between two big thinkers and all who choose to listen in, either by accident or design. Simply stated, you'll find yourself easily lost in the tight, exquisite mazes created and crafted freely by fellow metropolitans saxophonist Noah Preminger and bassist Kim Cass. Slaughter" is a ...

If you followed saxophonist Noah Preminger's early career you might have read an interview where he revealed his fascination with boxing. The fact that he trained in the sweet science for nearly a decade while making music is evident in the pugilistic blues heard on self-released albums Pivot: Live At The 55 Bar (2015) and Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground (2016). On those two recordings and Genuinity (Criss Cross, 2018), he had a perfect sparring partner in ...

Jazz has become fringe
art. Sure, Chris Botti and Diana Krall still move tickets, but the talented students pouring out of Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory face a tough economic reality: Graduates often make more money behind the counter at Starbucks than blowing their horns. But young players can take heart in an upswing in the scene. The South End's Beehive has done so well booking jazz in the past seven years, the owners opened a ...

Noah Preminger Plays Ballads on Tenor: "Before the Rain"
Source:
Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards
Coltrane's Ballad album gave much credence to the idea that a cutting-edge player could still say something important within the ballad form. Since then there have been others. Young tenor saxman Noah Preminger weighs in with his own Before the Rain (Palmetto) and he does it with style. He has picked the right players for this quartet date. Frank Kimbrough, piano, John Hebert, bass, and Matt Wilson, drums, are seasoned professionals, each major players who can be expected to render ...

He is joined on this album by a classy group including Frank Kimbrough on piano, John Hebert on bass and the always interesting Matt Wilson on drums. The music the group makes is spacious and moody, with an emotionally late-night vibe of rain slicked pavement under ...

Young Bandleader Plays, and Listens
Source:
Michael Ricci
Precocity without deference can make for a rough start in jazz. The tenor saxophonist Noah Preminger, at 23, clearly understands that: since taking his first real steps as a bandleader a couple of years ago, he has worked often with musicians of deep experience and generous judgment. Dry Bridge Road (Nowt), his auspicious debut, released last year, reflected this strategy. So, too, will a forthcoming live album, which he recorded on Sunday and Monday at the Cornelia Street Cafe. Mr. ...

"More than just a promising starting point, this is a display of integrity; here’s a musician you feel you can trust... Preminger’s album “Dry Bridge Road” is unusually graceful... [he] plays with care and dry precision, dividing his time among all registers, with even tone and projection in each." - Ben Ratliff, New York Times
"Noah Preminger's impressive premiere, Dry Bridge Road, offers a tantalizing glimpse into the future of an up-and-coming artist." - Troy Collins, All About Jazz
"Preminger is a more than promising young tenor saxophonist whose cohorts on this recording debut reflect the esteem in which he is held... the unison line of Sax of a Kind with Ben Monder is immaculately played, while Preminger's solos, particularly on Where Seagulls Fly and Blues for Steve Lacey, are assured and well conceived. Tellingly, in the group improvisations that develop, Preminger sounds thoroughly at home." - Ray Comiskey, Irish Times (Dublin)
