Paul Rutherford

Born Greenwich, London, 29 February 1940, trombone, euphonium, piano.

A stalwart of the early UK free scene who has played in, and contributed positively to, just about every available possibility, in more structured musics as well as obvious free situations: Globe Unity Orchestra, London Jazz Composer's Orchestra, Mike Westbrook Orchestra, and what appears to be a myriad of small groups, e.g.: Iskra 1903, duo with Paul Lovens, Quintet Moderne, and, recently, in trio with Anthony Braxton and Evan Parker. Perhaps most famous for solo trombone improvisations, and while many would dispute the fact that The Gentle harm of the bourgeoisie is the best solo trombone recording, it can't be far from the truth. Great title too.

On the topic of trombone multiphonics (contentious area this - Derek Bailey, Improvisation, p. 109) Paul Rutherford implied to Rusch (1993) that he was the first to use the technique, and particularly before that documented by Joachim Berendt.

Mike Westbrook Concert Band: Marching Song Volumes 1 & 2 Plus Bonus Tracks

Alan Wakeman: The Octet Broadcasts 1969 and 1979

Despite a perception fostered by the more breathless media coverage given to the young lions who have emerged on the London scene since the mid 2010s, an identifiably British strand of jazz did not kick off when Shabaka Hutchings' Sons Of Kemet released its debut album in 2013. The groundwork was laid back in the 1950s by musicians such as saxophonist Joe Harriott and pianist Stan Tracey. In the 1970s, two bandleaders who carried the torch for ...

Paul Rutherford: The Conscience

Paul Rutherford: In Backward Times

Read "In Backward Times" reviewed by Enrico Bettinello

Paul Rutherford: The Conscience

Read "The Conscience" reviewed by John Sharpe

Recorded in 1999, but previously unissued, The Conscience unites iconoclastic English trombonist Paul Rutherford and Japanese drummer Sabu Toyozumi. It constitutes the first in a series of ten or so sessions from the Japanese Chap Chap label to be released by the Lithuanian NoBusiness imprint through to 2018. Both men were among the first generation of free improvisers in their respective countries. Although Rutherford died in 2007, Toyozumi remains active. Over the years he has played with just about everyone ...

Mike Westbrook Concert Band: Marching Song Volumes 1 & 2 Plus Bonus Tracks

Read "Marching Song Volumes 1 & 2 Plus Bonus Tracks" reviewed by Roger Farbey

It's hardly surprising that Mike Westbrook reigned supreme in the latter quarter of the 1960s and early 70s. His big band was voted top of that category in the late-lamented Melody Maker British jazz polls for 1970 (and the two years either side of that). In the same year, his third album, Marching Song, recorded a year earlier came third in the category “LP Of The Year" (the number one album that year was John McLaughlin's seminal Extrapolation so there ...

Paul Rutherford Trio: Gheim - Live at Bracknell 1983

Read "Gheim - Live at Bracknell 1983" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro
