Colin Vallon

Born:

After studying classical music for 2 years Colin Vallon (born November 17 1980 in Lausanne) took classes with jazz pianist Marc Ueter at the age of fourteen. He enrolled at the Swiss Jazz School when he was 18 and studied with Silvano Bazan, William Evans, Manuel Bärtsch and Bert Joris.

In 1999, he founds the Colin Vallon trio with Lorenz Beyeler on double-bass and Raphaël Pedroli on drums; in 2004 it released his debut-album « Les Ombres ». At that time, he starts to use and develop his own prepared piano techniques. In January 2005, the trio opens the Swiss Diagonales Festival with New-York guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel.

KALI Trio: The Playful Abstract

Read "The Playful Abstract" reviewed by David Bruggink

Nik Bärtsch's Ronin Rhythm Records has become a go-to label for hypnotic groove enthusiasts. Established in 2006, its artists share a focus on uncommon time signatures and post-minimalist composition but interpret them in strikingly different ways. For example, Blaer leans towards the more restrained, stately and steady, building to powerful catharsis, similar to the Colin Vallon Trio; ...

Dörner-Schwerdt-Sartorius: Jul Fuel

Read "Jul Fuel" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Jul Fuel unfolds more like a tale of three cities than a singular statement--especially when the tracks are experienced in album order. The release transitions from a solo piano performance to a piano-drum duet, a trio performance, and, finally, a slide trumpet solo. At its core, however, Jul Fuel revolves around German improviser Axel Dörner, even ...

Lawrence Peryer's Jazz & Beyond for 2024

Read "Lawrence Peryer's Jazz & Beyond for 2024" reviewed by Lawrence Peryer

I very much enjoy the moment we are in for improvisatory and creative music. So many traditions are coming into contact and interacting with each other: jazz cats, indigenous practitioners, electronic music experimenters, modern composers and many others. The breakdown and blurring of genre divides and dogma is something I revel in. “Collision Music," to quote ...

Read "Mike Jurkovic's Best Jazz Albums Of 2024" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

It has been, to say the least, one hell of fright night year. But here is the music that stayed with me, through thick and thin, and all manner of human foible and political upheaval. Vijay IyerCompassion ECM Records Kris Davis

Colin Vallon: Samares

Read "Samares" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

One does not so much come upon the astute athletics at play within the soundscapes of pianist Colin Vallon as much as get lured, baited, then intrigued by them. Vallon who, for whatever reason, has not been on the new release radar since the ancient precepts he brought to light on 2017's tranquilly vibrant ...

Christoph Irniger's Open City: Retracing The Tenor's Evolution On Intakt Records

Read "Christoph Irniger's Open City: Retracing The Tenor's Evolution On Intakt Records" reviewed by Friedrich Kunzmann

A sound poet of sorts, Swiss tenor saxophonist Christoph Irniger has gained quite a reputation for his lyrical tone and creative penmanship, more often than not responsible for the majority of the memorable repertoire he records and performs. The poetic nature of his music is owed not only to the artists that have influenced him over ...

Nicolas Masson: Travelers
