Musician

Ingrid Laubrock

Born:

Originally from Germany, Ingrid Laubrock started having music lessons at the age of four and began to play classical piano and sing in local choirs aged eight. Her first recording experience dates from that time, singing the solo voice in an arrangement for an a capella choir. Throughout her childhood she performed in church choirs and public concerts at the local music school.

In 1989 Ingrid left Germany for London where she took up the alto saxophone.

A year of studies with ex-Jazz Messenger Jean Toussaint followed in 1992. Soprano and tenor followed shortly afterward. In 1993 she met singer Monica Vasconcelos and guitarist Ife Tolentino, both from Sao Paulo in Brazil.

Steve Lehman, Nels Cline, Satoko Fujii & Hobbs/Shanko

Read "Steve Lehman, Nels Cline, Satoko Fujii & Hobbs/Shanko" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

It's not easy to find a more accomplished figure in creative music than Anthony Braxton. Alto saxophonist Steve Lehman knows that, and he honours his one-time mentor with a bristling new live album, The Music Of Anthony Braxton, destined for 2025 best-of lists. This recording is a reminder of Lehman's fearlessness. There are other excellent new ...

Sara Serpa: Encounters and Collisions

Read "Encounters and Collisions" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Moving On Music: Literal Magic

Read "Moving On Music: Literal Magic" reviewed by Ian Patterson

2025 marks the 30th anniversary of Moving On Music (MOM), one of Ireland's finest music promotion companies. There will probably be little hoopla, no big party and probably not even a cake. Instead, it will be business as usual for the small but industrious team of four, and that means bringing the best music of all ...

Remembering Susan Alcorn: Bucking The Trends

Read "Remembering Susan Alcorn: Bucking The Trends" reviewed by Ian Patterson

All About Jazz is saddened to learn of the passing of Susan Alcorn--pedal steel guitarist extraordinaire. She died on January 31st of natural causes. Perhaps more than any other pedal steel guitarist before her, Alcorn took her instrument into musical terrain not usually associated with it. She played country music for twenty years, but ...

Brûlez les meubles: The Guitar and Bass Duo Who Threw Away the Script

Read "Brûlez les meubles: The Guitar and Bass Duo Who Threw Away the Script" reviewed by Lawrence Peryer

The name Brûlez les meubles carries a wry irony. While it literally means “burn the furniture" in English, the Québec duo playfully inverts the common French phrase “sauver les meubles" (preserve the essential). This tension between preservation and reinvention defines their artistic approach, especially on their latest album Folio #5 (Tour de Bras/Circum-Disc, 2024).

John Sharpe's Best Releases of 2024

Read "John Sharpe's Best Releases of 2024" reviewed by John Sharpe

From the 200 or so discs that I heard in 2024, here are the ten new issues and three gems saved from obscurity, which gave me the most pleasure. As always these selections are entirely subjective, and take no account of the many other albums which I would no doubt have loved if I had heard ...

Starting out the year with our usual variety of musics that appeal to both the head and the heart: Listen up for the brilliance of Satoko Fujii, the subtle passion of Jessica and Tony Jones, the earnestness of Sara Serpa, and the commitment to human well being reflected in the music of Miguel Zenon.
