Victor Goines

Victor Goines has played the clarinet since the age of eight and continued his studies with Carl Blouin, Sr., who introduced him to the saxophone at St. Augustine High School. In 1980, he entered Loyola University in New Orleans where he studied clarinet and saxophone, receiving a Bachelor of Music Education Degree in 1984.

As Mr. Goines' interest in jazz increased, he contacted Ellis Marsalis in 1983 to take private lessons. Eight months later, Mr. Marsalis selected Mr. Goines to play saxophone as a member of his quartet. Mr. Goines left New Orleans in 1987 to pursue his graduate studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, receiving his Master of Music Degree in 1990.

During time off, Mr. Goines traveled to New York City to perform. While living there, he worked with Ruth Brown, Lionel Hampton, Bobby Watson, Jack McDuff, and others. He also joined the orchestra of the Broadway musical Black and Blue, where he played alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, and clarinet. In 1991, after his return to New Orleans, Mr. Goines won both the New Orleans City-Wide Jazz Saxophone Competition and the Best of New Orleans Jazz competition. Later that year he was selected to compete in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, outperforming nearly 300 musicians from around the world to make it to the semifinals.

Mr. Goines released his first recording in 1992 entitled Genesis (AFO Records). His second recording entitled Joe's Blues was released March, 1998 ( Rosemary Joseph Records) and his third entitled To Those We Love So Dearly was released August, 1999 (Rosemary Joseph Records). He has also recorded with Wynton Marsalis (Pulitzer Prize Recipient) on Blood On The Fields (Columbia Records, 1997), Joe Cool's Blues (Columbia Records, 1995), Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra on Big Band Treasures Live (Smithsonian Institution, 1996), Ellis Marsalis on The New Orleans Music: Vocal Jazz (Rounder Records, 1985), Marcus Roberts on Portraits In Blue (Sony Classical, 1996 - nominated for 1996 Grammy - Best Large Ensemble Performance) and Swing Into Christmas (Columbia Records, 1995), the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra on They Came To Swing (Columbia Records, 1994) and Live In Swing City (Columbia Records, 1999), Donald Harrison on Modern Brass Band, Damon Short on The Penguin Shuffle (Blue Room Records, 1986), Germaine Bazzle on Standing Ovation (AFO Records, 1993), Ruth Brown on Fine And Mellow (Fantasy Records, 1992), The George French Trio on See What I'm Sayin' (Lou Nat Records), Marlon Jordan on Marlon's Mode (Arabesque Records, 1997), Contemporary Arts Center Jazz Orchestra, conducted by David Torkanowsky, on Mood Indigo featuring Johnny Adams, Germaine Bazzle and George French (Rounder Records, 1997), Don Vappie and the Creole Jazz Serenaders on Creole Blues (Vappielle Records, 1997), Ruth Brown on R + B = Ruth Brown (Bullseye Blues, 1997), Jump Start And Jazz - Two Ballets by Wynton Marsalis (Sony Classical, 1997), Edward Anderson on Fertile Crescent (AFO Records, 1998), Irma Thomas, Marcia Ball and Tracy Nelson on Sing It! Read "Wycliffe Gordon: What You Dealin' With?" reviewed by C. Andrew Hovan

Privy to the entire history of jazz trombone via the technological age in which we live, Wycliffe Gordon seems to have utilized this information in such a way that his own playing displays elements from various periods and a technical competence that is indeed remarkable. “I was most familiar, at first, with guys who played with Louis Armstrong, namely Trummy Young or Kid Ory and later on Jack Teagarden," says Gordon about the early years in his development. “Later I ...

Glenn Close & Ted Nash: Transformation

Read "Transformation" reviewed by Paul Rauch

Transformation is a multi-disciplinary work from saxophonist/composer Ted Nash, and iconic actress Glenn Close, exploring the multi-faceted and abstract theme of transformation. The works included examine the theme from both universal and individual conceptions. Music and literature at its best is clearly transformative for anyone experiencing it. Transformation is by essence, the highest and most illuminating expression of change. Nash embraced the project by creating a colorful and illustrative collection of pieces, embracing Close's curated literary selections recited by the ...

Glenn Close/Ted Nash: Transformation

Read "Transformation" reviewed by Jack Bowers

When confronted by an album whose tracks include the names “Creation" (Parts 1 and 2), “Preludes for Memnon," “Wisdom of the Humanities" and “Reaching the Tropopause," among others, one braces for whatever may transpire, buoyed by the thought that with Glenn Close, Ted Nash and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on board, how displeasing could it be? The verdict: not at all displeasing—but it must be appraised on its own terms, as a series of philosophical and hopefully transformative ...

Kenny Washington: What's The Hurry

Read "What's The Hurry" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

Despite what many may think, there's no prescribed timeline for firsts and career milestones. Some artists decide to initially take the reins to record when they're 18. Others only get around to doing it when they're 80. The bottom line: The right time is the right time, and nobody should worry about getting there before they're ready. What's the hurry? Feeding into that line of thinking is the debut studio date from veteran vocalist Kenny Washington. A ...
